We dry-vacuum thoroughly through the seams and under the cushions to pull the grit out physically, because wetting sand turns it to paste and drives it deeper into the fibre. Only once the sand is out do we move on to extraction for the salt and general soiling. Skipping that first step is exactly how sand ends up permanently ground in.
