Semaphore is a beachside western suburb built around its jetty and its esplanade, and the housing runs from restored 1900s cottages a street back from the water to holiday flats and short-stay rentals right on the front. Salt is in the air here in a way it simply is not a few kilometres inland, and it quietly changes what a couch has to put up with.
You get two kinds of lounge in Semaphore. In the character cottages there are older, better pieces — linen, some wool, the occasional inherited chesterfield — kept in front rooms that face the sea breeze. Sand is the obvious one — it works down into the seams and under the cushions and behaves like fine sandpaper against the fibres every time someone sits down. The subtler problem is salt haze: a grey, flat cast that develops on couches near the front, because salt is hygroscopic and holds humidity in the weave. Coastal properties also see more mould spotting on the underside of cushions than inland homes, especially in flats that get shut up between short stays.
We dry-vacuum sand and grit out of the seams first — wetting sand before you lift it just turns it to paste and grinds it deeper. Salt haze needs a proper rinse-extraction, not a surface pass, because the salt is dissolved through the weave rather than sitting on top. Where we find mould we treat it with an anti-microbial rather than just masking the smell. For couches in short-stay rentals we run fast-drying extraction and can turn a piece around inside the changeover window so the place is guest-ready.

That is almost always salt. Living this close to the water, airborne salt settles into the fabric and holds humidity, which is what makes a couch feel slightly damp and look flat and grey. A surface clean will not shift it because the salt is dissolved right through the weave. A proper rinse-extraction flushes it out, and the fabric comes back brighter and drier to the touch.
